Bread

We've had a busy week learning about making bread. For shared reading we read the book Go Facts: Bread. We learned that you need water, salt, flour and yeast to make bread. When mixed together, the yeast has a chemical reaction which allows the dough to rise, making it light and fluffy inside. We made some bread ourselves in class. Although it wasn't a huge success (it didn't rise much), it still tasted delicious. We are going to review the recipe we used, make some changes, and try again!


Science: States of Matter

This term for Science we will be learning about the Material World. The material world strand involves the study of matter and the changes it undergoes. 
We have learned that matter is all around us. We have started with the three common states of matter: SOLIDS, LIQUIDS and GASES. Room 1 have been learning a lot about how matter can move from one state to another, but can still be the same substance. A change of state, also called a phase change, is a physical change from one state of matter to another, for example, from solid to liquid or from liquid to gas.

The Bee man visit

Today we had a visit from Dan the bee man, and Kathy from Comvita. 
They taught us about the importance of bees. Did you know it is Bee Aware Month?
We learned how the bees live in hives, and that groups of hives are called an apiary. We also learned about the different roles different bees have within their colony. Here is a video of us doing the honey bee "waggle" (this is how bees communicate).

The Science Roadshow

We had an amazing time this morning at the Science Roadshow. We learned about flammable materials, sounds waves, absorption, and much much more. The most popular exhibit seemed to be the wind tunnel. Here is a video of Jordashay and Janita trying it out.

Te Reo: WALT match words to the correct pictures and use proper pronunciation.

Today we learned some Te Reo for Kai Huawhenua. We worked in groups and discussed what word we thought matched which picture. We then went online to check our answers by using Maori Dictionary. We also used Maori Dictionary by listening to the correct pronunciation, and repeating it. Next, we collaboratively created slideshows to make posters for our classroom.

Measurement

Room 1 have just started the maths strand measurement. Today we discussed what we already know about measurement. We learned that measuring involves length, weight, volume, time and temperature.We will learn to measure accurately, using various measuring instruments.

Autumn

It is term 2 and room 1 are going to learn about Autumn. To begin with, we have done a padlet to show what we already know about Autumn. 
We are learning to use adjectives to describe. We are also learning to use simile to make our writing more interesting. We will link both of these learning intentions and create some amazing Autumn similes.

WALT think about the energy that things need to move.

Room One's science unit has introduced the class to Energy and Motion. Students had to think about the energy that things need to move. They have been exploring how energy makes things go, from powering vehicles to moving one’s body. We have made some rubber band racers to discover the relationship between how much energy is stored in a material and how much is released.

HMNZS Wellington

Today the senior school were lucky enough to go to Opua and visit the HMNZS Wellington.The Wellington is a Navy Frigate. We learned a lot about what happens on the ship, and about how the Navy crew work and live on board. 


 





After that, we went over to the Waitangi Treaty grounds and watched a show. We were VERY impressed with the performance!
We looked carefully at the tukutuku panels, carvings, and kowhaiwhai patterns. I think we may be inspired to get arty!
